This might be an issue that has been dealt with before, but rather than skim through the whole forum I'll post a new topic.

MGM is sometimes written with and sometimes without the use of hyphens. I was under the impression that we should contribute Studios exactly as they appear in the credits, but I get NO votes when using MGM without hyphens (even if no hyphens are present in the credits).

Any thoughts?

It is used at some points in MGM history and not at others, it all is what you see On Screen for THAT film.

Always with hyphens according to the Studio Reference Thread.

Indeed! Nowhere do the rules say to use "as credited" for studios - on the contrary, the term "correct names for studios" is used, with a link to said forumthread. On top of that, Ken recently implemented a new 'Replace' feature in the studios department to make it easier getting rid of numerous variations of the same studios. I for one certainly see no need to use both 'Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer' and 'Metro Goldwyn Mayer' in my database. That would be the same as having both a "Robert Downey Jr." and a "Robert Downey, Jr." in the actor list, and hey, aren't we just busy trying to get rid of that? Let's not move that issue over the studios field, please.

This is exactly what I said was going to happen.  We are now going to end up with garbage data.  Thank Ken for locks.

What kind of strange remark is this? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Skip who invented the Studio thread in the first place? And now you and him are claiming this will lead to bad data. I don't get it. All I can say is: Thank God for locks.

What does Skip inventing the studio thread have to do with my claiming it will lead to garbage data?  I have never liked the studio thread and this is exactly why I have never liked it.

I think you do need to say something else, because it's your studio list, and your list says that "Metro Goldwyn Mayer" is unacceptable!
If you've changed your mind, then I think the studio list needs updating.

He agreed with your claim that it will lead to garbage data, which is a paradoxon

He created the thread, he made it list the version with hyphens as the only correct one, and now he agrees with you that that's garbage data...

And if I were editing the thread still, I would have made that change because of Metro's history but it's not my responsibility. I suggest you PM jlproffitt and request that he add Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

If I'm not mistaken James is out of commission for the next few days. If you PM him and don't get as response right away give him at least till the weekend.

So that is recent history...?

Just curious, as the thread it the IVS site, last edited February 20, 2007, also shows the un-hyphened version as unacceptable...

And your point is...what exactly? Nobody had asked the question, I have other things that I do, keeping up that thread which I did better than is being done currently, was still not something I devoted full attention to. The topic had not come up, so it had not bubbled to the surface to be addressed. However, at the same time since you were part of it I presume you recall a certain compromise position adopted to bring us CLOSER to As Credited...but that's another story. I am not in control of the thread now, though I have offered so....

You people really do like to play let's see if we can belittle Skip, and then you wonder why I get nasty and bite back.
