| Posted: | | | | When Ken introduced color information in Profiler, there was a lot of discussion if it should be defaulted to "Color" or not. Someone even claimed that 99% of all titles were color, so not setting a default would cause a lot of totally unnecessary profile updates.
Well, now that we have had a lot of updates, these are the statistics for my collection: Color - 2494 Black & white - 657 Colorized - 3 Mixed - 31
This means that of those titles that have had this property set by now, more than 20% are not "Color". I don't know how representative my collection is, but I think in retrospect it's fairly safe to say that Ken made the right decision.
Introducing incorrect data into a database for the sake of convenience is almost never a good idea. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | I would guess that your breakdown isn't representative of the average user. I would say the vast majority of DVDs are in fact color, I'd think that it's closer to 99% than your 78.3%. Not to say I advocated defaulting all profiles to color to begin with, but I think there could have had some bulk changes that would have been much more convenient than having to update each single profile.
Funny you brought this up because I'm going through my collection right now updating the color field. I have a pretty quick process down but it is still going to take a bit of time to get it done.
I'll also play devil's advocate, the absence of correct data is also bad data. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

| Posted: | | | | Actually, the absence of data in this case means "undetermined", which is not bad data.
And you're right in that a smart algorithm could have reduced the amount of errors, but it would still have introduced some bad data.
And if you look at the total amount of titles, then the percentage of color is almost certainly higher than in my collection. But that's quite irrelevant. It's the amount in the users' collections that is relevant. And it would be the users with the largest collections that would have suffered the most. And I'm not convinced that the percentage there is closer to 99% than to 78%. But I guess I could be wrong... | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | I have 308 profiles set to B&W out of 3416 but not all have been updated yet. But that would probably put it somewhere between 10 and 15 % when I'm done. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | For me, that would be: Colour: 4086 (97%) B&W: 115 (3%) Colourised: none Mixed: 6 (0.14%) (total 4197) There is some overlap between colour and B&W as some are labeled both, for instance some of the 'Disney Treasures'. Also, there may be the odd one mascarading as colour while it is something else, since I labeled all my profiles as colour by default. But overall, these figures are about right I think. (Edit: Just checked by sorting my collection by production year. I think there are some 10 to 20 profiles still wrongly accused of being in colour, will work tomorrow on update contributions... . So the B&W percentage is perhaps 4% or slightly above) | | | Eric

When I filter my collection for color hundreds of profiles that are in fact color don't show up as color when I filter for them, I consider that bad data. not a big deal as I'm slowly fixing it. At least he made them automatically approved if you are just contributing the color field. Quoting GSyren: Quote: And you're right in that a smart algorithm could have reduced the amount of errors, but it would still have introduced some bad data. I have no real issue with what Ken decided, but they could have gone anything before 1950 gets B&W, anything above 1965 gets color, or something similar. What percentage of those discs are in color? I'd say it is much closer to 99% than 78%. I would agree that DVD Profiler users probably tend to collect older B&W movies than Joe Six-pack but I still think that the vast majority of collected profiles are indeed in color. Almost every current movie gets a DVD/Blu-ray release now and 99.9% of those are in color and has been the case since DVDs became mainstream. Older catalog titles make a very small dent in the overall numbers I'd love to see if Ken could query the database and see what the number currently is. I have a feeling that it would skew more to B&W than is actually in the database as people would tend to easily mark their B&W films as such as there are fewer to do. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting DoubleDownAgain: Quote: You can call it "undetermined", I still call it wrong. You can call it whatever you like, but the fact is that "undetermined" is exactly correct, until someone has verified what it actually is. If Ken had set "color" as default and one had filtered ones collection then all ones films would have shown up. How is that "correct"? The big problem with setting a default is that you have no way of knowing if that value has been verified or not. There is no way of differentiating a "good guess" from a verified value by just looking at the data. And that's why "undetermined" is the right way to eventually get actually correct data. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |
