You can use MakeMKV as a decrypter for other programs.

@Magmadrag

VLC automatically skips copyright warnings and disclaimers that usually begin the playback.  Try having VLC play that beginning.  When it's playing and you see the black screen, right-click -> Playback -> Title.  Play Title 1.  Refer to this screen shot.  If it works, that means some discs, like yours, are supposed to play from the very beginning or they won't work.

@movie_madness: I might give this a try. But I am not sure if I shall agree or not: All data of DVDs I did, I used VLC for, and as far as I remember I've seen the copyright warning etc. of each and every disc.

Do you see copyright warnings of the disc you have problem with?  If you do, then do the opposite: set VLC to not show such warnings.  Go to Tools, Preferences, at the bottom where it says "simple" or "all" settings, choose "all" settings. Open up the "Input Codecs" tree.  Open the "Access Modules" tree.  Click "DVD with menus."  In your case, see if "Start directly in menu" is checked or not.  Change it to the opposite.  Close VLC and restart.

Another possibility is your DVD drive on your PC.  If that is the only drive you have tried, it could be the culprit.  I have two drives, and I've had many discs that played on one but not the other.  It usually happens on older drives.

@movie_madness: I don't see anything than a black screen.... when I tell VLC to play the DVD for a part of a second I can see a running time and then nothing again and screen remains black. If I use the right click I can choose one of the titltes/episodes on the disc to play. But all remain black. I never had this before and I hope I won't have it again. But so far this disc caused a very big Dislike :-D

@specise_8472: I could rip the DVD with several programs, but I don't want to rip it, I only want to play it to write down cast & crew. If I would need to rip every disc for editing data, I never could have done so many profiles. And ripping just to get the data is a No Go for me. Sorry!

Any way to share the full ISO (no shrinkage or other tampering ) image of one of the discs? Sounds like too juicy a problem to pass up.

Any reason you have not responded to this?

What I mean is that you can use the MakeMKV decrypt engine as a real time decrypter for your player. No need to actually rip anything.

I just had the next fun with VLC :-)

When I wanted to type cast & crew for the last few Futurama seasons VLC told me kind of "Set the language to your native language" or something similar.

Well, my setting was "Auto", but when I changed to "German" I got the same message. As this message was in English, I changed my settings to English. Okay, DVD played - but then I had no chance to see the "credits after the credits" where all the German speakers are listed.

So I used the Leawo Blu-Ray Player to run those DVDs - and it worked.

But also that player is not able to handle "Helden auf vier Pfoten".

I am learning something here. But I would be surprised if the players are actually doing any translation. They are most likely accessing pre-translated text stored on the disc. That means that the failure you are seeing for that DVD you mentioned is possibly not due to the player, but that the translated text is not actually on the disc? (or video segments where the translation has been done)

I only can presume but agree that this text seems to be part of the DVD. But the crazy sing is: Futurama had 8 seasons, all released by the same company. The first (I think) four ones didn't have any problems with the same settings of VLC, but 5 - 8 have.

The mystery of the structure of a DVD no "amateur" is able to see and especially not to understand :-)

DVDs are encoded by people. Need I say more?

There are standards for how they are encoded, but a lot of fields are optional and with no quality control on the content. (or maybe I should say insufficient quality control)

Here is one explanation of the DVD file format.

I've had good results with the most recent version of Leawo Blu-ray player. I've mostly used it for Blu-rays of course but I just tested a DVD and it seemed to work okay.
