My first exposure to The Docotr was through the paperback adaptations published in the 70's. I had read about 70 or so before seeing my first episode. So I was not one of those Americans who saw Tom Baker first, and made him my favorite. My favorites have always been Troughton, Hartnell, Tennant, and McCoy in that order. I am even one of the small minority who think Colin Baker was as good as Tom.
My problem with Tom Baker was that following Pertwee, he and the writers tried to bring back some of the lightness of Troughton, but missed it and for a few seasons made it almost Carry on Who'ing. The last few seasons of his run seemed darker and a return to what I feel others had brought to the show before.

Also John Nathan-Turner stayed Waaaay to long and like visitors and fish his staying that long began to stink.
