| Posted: | | | | Here's the official announcement in English: http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htmQuote: Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses 19 February, 2008
Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content
TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.
"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."
Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.
Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

Note however, that patterns of feedback from one user to another receive greater scrutiny. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative |

| Posted: | | | | Let's get back to the original post here: Now that the war is over and I along with 1 million others have purchased and use HDD products today.., There are a number of Options I could follow ., (AFAIK- ) Currently the only 'burners' on the market can only burn regular DVD's but not BD or HDD . If the studios arn't producing HDD movies they have very little to worry about for any illegal purposes in the market place. We could take our Family Home videos and convert them over to HDD with no generational loss in signal and also put a lot more GB onto a single disc over conventional DVD discs. Plus an other upside is Home cable recording. High Defination digital cable movies currently being played back in anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 sound.. is a godsend to some, and I would gladly keep my player if I had an opportunity to playback (i.e) Lawrence of Arabia in Hi Def.. HD.NET(and BTW keeping a personal library of ANY movies/TV currently playing on Cable TV/Satellite is Not against the law, so please no Red arrows ).. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Also, if you have not jumped in head first at this point, there is no real need to get a combo drive / player as all previously released HD DVD exclusives will surely find their way to the blu-ray disc format. That makes the most sense to me. I returned my Samsung BD-5000UP as soon as it arrived week before last in anticipation of today's "official" announcement. I have exactly 1 HD DVD. Why would I need a combo player? | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting skipnet50: Quote: And your point is, what exactly. I have been following the developments in this for the several weeks, I have my spies and i knew about Toshiba's plans for quite some time. So what. If you think I report everything I know when I know it...guess again Opus.
Skip Forgive my confusion Skip, but if you have your spies and have known about Toshiba's plans for quite some time now, why did you mislead all of us last Friday with this: Quote: This is still very muddy water and i don't think the "war" is over yet. In terms of hardware sales the two formats are splitting the market. In terms of software sales BD leads with approximately 60%. However, Sony is getting all excited over BD software sales of 8.3 Million, which when put up against DVD software sales of 1.1 Billion isn't even a drop in the bucket. So, I think we have a ways to go yet. I'm just trying to understand why 5 days ago you said something completely different. Why were you unable to spill the beans last week? And why didn't you just say nothing if you knew this was coming rather then making us all believe the war was far from over? Please feel free to ignore this post if you've signed some sort of NDA with Toshiba or the BDA. I wouldn't want you to get into trouble to satisify my own curiousity. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

| Posted: | | | | Because , Mark as I also said if I were Toshiba, i still have one arrow in my quiver and i will play it for all it's worth. I am not going to reveal any information that I am not comfortable with, that simple. It's not my place. Any more tha I am going to reveal everything I know even now. Why should I, pray tell...ther are too many snipers around here who love to take pot shots.<scratching head>I will teel whatever I am feel I can reveal, if you recall I have revealed more in the past and what have I gotten for my trouble. Not much.<shrugs>
I knew that Toshiba had not merely delayed Star Trek TOS but had in fact cancelled it back in late December and had a very good read on the reason for the cancellation. That's all I have to say on this topic, its usefulness is over, at least for me.
I will editorialize here a little bit a say that IMNHO the consumers lost this battle, they did not make the decision, the decision was made the big boxes who simply wanted to support only one format and made the choice for us. The big winner...likely to be LG and the combo deck if they can get the kinks worked out of it. I think it's too bad that Toshiba left the last arrow on the table, BD will be a weaker format for it. The first known title which will begin to truly showcase BD is going to be predictably from BVHE this October.

| Posted: | | | | I don't think a combo deck is of any importance at this point. People now getting into the format only need Blu Ray, people who wanted both already have it.
Maybe in a few years a combo player may be attractive to some, who have both kinds of discs and need a replacement player for the HD DVDs. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

AHHHH but there are those who have invested in HD not BD, and now they have to switch, they will go buy a combo deck.
