What I am asking myself, is, why Ken would bother?

Unless he has another webpage with a totally different name that sells DVD Profiler under a totally different name, I don't see any attempt to approach the rental store market, not in terms of another license or version.

So why should he care if someone uses it as store management tool?

I know work-arounds are never as good as getting the feature added to the program, but:

One way around this limitation is to change the UPC to 11 zeroes followed by a numerical value starting at one.

Meaning, for your first conversion to a "manual" profile you'd do 000000000001, for the second 000000000002 and so on. Eventually you'd obviously have 10 zeroes followed by 10, then 11, etc.

KM
Um, I think that's what we've been talking about all along (DVD/Change UPC in fact creates a manual profile if you use a 12 digit number that is not in the database). Or you can use the disc ID of an inserted disc.

The advantage of doing it with a program, is that you can grab the disc ID from the profile, or automatically pick an unused number - stuff like that. That's what I'm playing with to make a little tool, assuming the idea doesn't get shot down.

Because it is still his program!

Because supplying software for personal use and supplying software for business use come with their own completely different legal problems, in terms of support and responsibility if anything goes wrong.

If it is, then Giga Wizard isn't aware that this can be done as the first post in this thread says we have to create a manual profile and then populate it with data ourselves. With the method I mentioned that is not the case.

you can not convert a UPC/EAN or disc-id profile into a manual profile so it shows in the general info window: Manual DVD #1
you get a EAN/UPC message that explains the EAN/UPC appears not valid when you create 00000000001 or 0000000000001 barcode numbers. If you use valid EAN or UPC numbers these are borrowed and could contaminate the online DB.

Ok Giga and Astra - I got it. Since I'm usually doing it programmatically, I didn't realize that distinction. I always pre-fix the "M" anyway, so Profiler recognizes that I want a manual profile. If want to see what I mean, try the "Add Manual Profile" in BulkEdit. You can specify either an 11 digit number, or a disc-id, along with an optional title. That's how I plan to do it (programmatically, that is - not actually on that screen) - then copy the contents over from the original profile.

Just confirmed this as well. I was able to change the UPC of one title to 00000000001. You do get the message EAN/UPC appears not valid but you are allowed to continue and it asks you if you want to change the UPC/EAN. Clicking yes changes the UPC to 00000000001.

those are not Manual DVD id
what did you test?
When you enter a none EAN/UPC you get this:

if you continue you get this:

from an EAN/UPC or disc-id in the program you can not go to this:

So? What's the difference? You now have duplicate DVDs in your collection. What does it matter if the ID is 000000000001 or Manual DVD #1?

I think the difference is if you don't follow that numbering pattern and find your own, you could accidentally create a valid UPC and submit it, overwriting another profile.
A long shot I know, but the ability to convert to manual profiles would guarantee this couldn't happen.

And if I am not mistaken... the program don't let you contribute these UPC #'s (000000000001) does it? Only ask because I would hate to see something like that slipping into the online database.

Manual DVD id, will not contribute to the online database, fake id's could be contributed to the online.

I see... you could accidentally fall onto a real UPC. maybe not very likely but since the possibility is there I can see why it shouldn't be done.

No, they can't be contributed. DVD Profiler does not recongnize them as valid UPC/EAN numbers. I just tested it.
