| Posted: | | | | I mentioned crew and cast section as that is the only area that can 'handle names'..,
sure a tick box box in features is there already., but if I want to know what films that (i.e.) Ebert has talked /participated in for the commentary -, will suffice for the Crew section,. even though he is not an actor by trade., and his craft was only available thru the production of the DVD itself not necessarily the film itself from years ago. It has to be be a searchable item to find 'on the fly' by name . | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | Many posters (myself included) have suggested that the eventual solution to this is a detailed features field.
I think we need a solution will allow us to keep track of the cast/crew/historians on a particular commentary track, the names and running times of the various featurettes (5 min. vs 50 min. is important to note), what specific trailers are on the disc, if the deleted scenes have optional commentary, if the music only track contains composer commentary during the music-less moments, etc.
A simple text field (like the overview) is the easiest solution, but lacks features like the ability to filter individual commentators.
A possible solution is a multi-column field: Part 1 is the Type Field (Commentary, Featurette, Deleted Scenes, etc.); Part 2 is the Name Field (either the name of the extra or the names of the commentators); Part 3 is the running time (for commentaries it would usually be the length of the film). Of course, the process could be even more detailed, such as selecting Commentary opens multiple fields to enter each name individually. We could also use a 4th field to mark which disc the extras are on for multi-disc sets.
I'm sure others could refine this idea further, but something will eventually be need (at least by Version 4.0). |

The Commentaries I have really listened to I have never heard any crew data. The participants are identified, but they are usually identified on the Cover and the Menus as well. I think we need better definition in the world of Features, so that we can spell out what the various Featurettes are, or the Trailers and so on, there may even be those who might want to identify the various Chapters where such information is provided.<shrugs> But that seems a more appropriate place for this data than adding them to the film Cast and Crew.
Skip A lot of our members have from what I read ( including yourself), have their jackets or even the DVD's themselves in deep storage.., making it rather difficult on a whim's notice to find what title that director did for a commentary without anything tanglible in their hands.., or googling the Disc ID thru search engines.. the whole idea of getting away from 'second hand' information is to have the information first hand and accurate thru Profiler .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | Well, while I may not have the disc in hamd and therefore can't view the Menus, I do have my Cover images and I could at least use those as a starting point. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | I'd like to see each audio track be capable of having its own cast data. This could be used for dub casts, narrators of described audio, commentary participants, etc. |

| Posted: | | | | I always listen to the audio commentary. I usually put it on right after watching the movie and listen to it while I do chores. Or, if I decide to watch television, I listen to the commentary during commercials.
Although audio commentary can be boring at times, often it is not only enjoyable but enlightening. On Red Dragon (2002), for example, Ellen Burstyn's role of the grandmother is uncredited. The director gives that information in the commentary.
If possible, I too would like to see data for the audio commentary incorporated into the database. |

| Posted: | | | | Tha I am sure we will see, but since I have seldom if ever seen Cast and Crew listing for Commentaries that would not be the proper place. As an expansion of the features allowing us to better define what the Features are is the correct way to deal with it. Such as Commentary by xxxxx, yyyyy and zzzzzz. I cer5tainly do not favor adding it to cast and Ccrew for the reasons I mentioned, nor do I see anything gained by being able to find out how many commentaries xxxx has done.

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Dr Pavlov: Quote: nor do I see anything gained by being able to find out how many commentaries xxxx has done. I do. It's not a question of how many but rather just being able to find them. I listen to most commentaries. I have some favorites and I keep track of their commentaries with tags. Roger Ebert and Martin Scorcese (who has done commentaries on movies other than his own) come to mind. Quoting Astrakan: Quote: I like the idea of being able to easily find out:
a) Who did a commentary on a particular movie, and b) What movies a particular person has done commentaries on
But I don't like the idea of putting it into the crew section, I'd much prefer some kind of alternate solution. Putting it into the crew section is misleading since the people involved with a commentary may not have been involved in the making of the movie itself.
KM I agree with your "a" and "b". I'd like to start using the "other" customizable crew section to track these for now for my local though instead of my tag system. | | | ...James

Skip Again,, I say cast and crew as this is an area that can handle names and links to other titles.. i.e. if I can see Roger Ebert in the Crew section ( under a commentary flag ) that name when clicked would direct me to his other films that I would currently have in my data base with his own contribuition of Comemntary that was done at the time of the Creation of the DVD release ( therefore crew), and that link could direct me to his other works, even if he was an extra.. ( therefore cast).. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | Well, Terry this an area where you and i differ. There are no formal Cast and Crew for most Commentaries, I do want to know who is in the Commentaries, which is part of Commentary detail on Covers and menus, but as to being able to find that Joe Blow did the following Commentaries, i could care less, and as I said since most Commentaries do not have a formal Cast/Crew list it seem totally inappropriate to misuse the Cast and crew listing in that way. Now per haps Ken should ADD a sparate section for Commentaries to achieve your desired objective, but for me being able to detail the Features is quite enough.

Skip .. exactly..,, perhaps something for 4.0 ? It's an area to ponder and debate on ..,, . and not just my objective .., It may well be an area that a lot of us DVD afficiado's need to achieve and fullfill ... Thanks for letting me vent this frustration.. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Skip and come to think of this,, are there not a few cover art's on the market that are printed incorrectly, ? ..you know, commentary is/ was meant for the ''future'' special two disc edition, but the single plain first release edition was printed incorrectly.., Therefore I do not trust or expect the printed editions to always be 100% accurate... and while the tick box will have to do..,, it doesn't help to find that special artist ( crew/cast whatever),,giving us what we paid the extra dollar or two for, in acquiring that edition.... .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird.
