Problems with searches is my biggest worry with accent characters.  Non-natives and even some natives are not going to remember which vowel in a name had an accent.

xradman has done a nice job of putting together a plan for dealing with non-Western names. I have pinned that thread. There is no way I could summarize it here, so I thought it best to allow that one to continue.

We can also use this thread to continue the discussions on the credited as field. The program is designed so that the credited as field should always contain the exact name of the actor as they are listed in the credits of the movie/show.

The question remains, what are a good set of rules for the common name or the master name. This name will never be seen when you have a value in the credited as field. It is used as a link between the 2 credits, where the actor had a different name in the credits, but it really is the same person.

Possible Source Suggestions:
1. Use IMDB as the source.
2. Use IMDB as a guide, allowing for debates on these forums on particular actors.
3. Actor's own website
4. Screen Caps/Time Stamps

General Rules (not a source):
1. No accents
2. Double quotes for nicknames in the middle name field
3. no commas after suffixes
4. periods after all suffixes
5. Middle initial should have a period after it.
6. Comma after the surname when there is a suffix

This is what I could gleam from the earlier post. Seems like we have 2 paths, one to define just general rules and one to define a source. I think that is a good idea, to work through both.

Note display above does not indicate an endorsement of any ideas above or a dismissal of another idea. I simply tried to summarize the earlier thread. If I missed an idea of yours, my apologies, and please add it back to the discussion.

Use this thread to voice an opinion on one/any/all of the options above or add another option.

-Gerri

1) Not crazy about using anyone as a source
2) This might work
3) Yes
4) Yes

1) NO!!!!!!!!!!! Emphatically no, if there is an accent in Francois, it should be there, if NOT the it does NOT appear. To do otherwise is a departure from As Credited. Proviso: provided Profiler supports the accent, if it doesn't there is not much we can do
2) Sold
3) Don't like it......as a general statement, if the  comma appears under As credited it should appear in Credited As
4) Period if they appear in the As credited
5) Again follow As Credited, if a period appears in the Credits then use it
6) Same as above

In short As Credited tells us how to fill in Credited As

Skip, it looks to me like you missed the point. This discussion is about how we will treat the common name. How can you say that it should be as credited, when it can be credited in several different ways for each actor?, depending on what movie you are profiling

EDIT: and how will a screenshot with timestamp prove anything concerning the common name?

The colour of her eyes, were the colour of insanity

Agree, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the common name only. I've not seen any dispute about what the 'credited as' should contain: That's 'as credited' only.

True. I just woke up, need my coffee.

1) Is still emphatically NO
2)Still sold
3-6) Still don't like it, because the style is already used elsewhere, I want Profiler not a clone of something else

If there is a way to program searches so that accent characters can be ignored during searches, then I am all for accents. But I think this is going to be very difficult not to mention Mueller vs. Muller problem that was mentioned before.

If you can do #2, I think we've got everyone in tentative agreement except Rifter.

There should be a way to do partial string searches, for, example Franois, leaving out the accented c, it's not perfect Mller would also kick back Millers but it would certainly narrow the search.

You say:

1) Not crazy about using anyone as a source

What are you proposing if we don't use anyone as a source. Not trying to start anything, just curious what you are thinking.

Are we supposed to debate the thousands / hundreds of thousands of names without using anything as a starting place? That sounds like a free for all to me. As has been pointed out, why reinvent the wheel?

his #2 was for the rules governing this, not for the source itself

His #2 sold is on quotes around nicknames, not on IMDb as a guide.

#2 Nicknames
or #2 IMDb as a discussion point

It's certainly not perfect and I am still hoping to find Eureka, but as I said I don't want a clone of something else. Ths is Profiler, if I thought some other place was better, I wouldn't worry about a clone I would simply go use it. So anything that takes into the cloning realm, such as the first suggestion, I am unalterably opposed to. But using it as a starting point to discuss seem workable.

Wait. From Skip's first post, don't we have a "maybe" on #2 as source?  If we do, we're getting awfully close...
