| Posted: | | | | I have six drawer DVD towers. Each drawer holds 100 discs. The disc sleeves are numbered from 1 to 600. As soon as I buy a new DVD/4K UHD disk I enter it into DVD Profiler and assign to it the next number in line in the DVD tower. In a very compact space I have 600 discs and all of the information on them I can get from my DVD Profiler database. As others have been mentioned, I buy the movie not the case. In addition to the current crop of approximately 300 Blu-rays and 150 4K discs, I also have two other towers with almost 800 DVDs. That’s over 1200 movies that take up very little space. I would hate to think, and my wife would not tolerate, how much space 1200 would take up. Periodically, I will print out on photo paper A three to a page listing and inserted into a big three ring binder that sits on the coffee table. Whenever someone comes over they get a big kick out of sitting with the disk binder and perusing all of the available movies. Since each page lists the collection number, it is simple enough to go over to the tower and pull out the disc that we want to watch. The cases and inserts go to the trash. |

| Posted: | | | | No, no no, you're all doing it wrong! I store all my DVDs & BDs in these boxes. I've three that sit under the sofa out of the way, but are easy just to pull out when I need access to them. Discs here are stored/sorted in the order I buy them (with the storage numbers referenced via Profiler that I've installed on a small Android tablet I keep just for this reason), unless a gap opens up where I've got rid of something for some reason, when I'll fill that first. Nearly all the cases I've disposed of (mostly given away via Freecycle), but the sleeves, slip covers and any inserts, booklets etc I keep in A5 plastic pockets in A5 leaver arch files on some shelves in my hall. There are presently 28 of these. However... I keep all my music-related (live performances etc) discs (with their original cases etc) (and quite a number of VHS tapes) on there own shelves (in my hall). These are stored alphabetically (with the media types and different case sizes mixed up together), as it's not too much bother to move them when needed to make room for something new higher up the alphabet. The exception are old bootleg VHS tapes, which sit on top of the shelve units. All my TV series and programmes are in the hall too, but in separate shelf units. These are also stored alphabetically, and within franchises normally chronologically. Again, like the music the media types and cases types are mixed up. However, bigger TV box sets get stored sort of on top of the shelf units and a book case in a quite random way, to use the most of the available space as the shelves are basically full now. However... In the living room are shelf units with all my Marvel, DC and Doctor Who related discs/cases, both films and TV. Doctor Who is stored in chronological order, (except box sets containing more than one story, which are then stored where the oldest episode in the box would be placed.) DC and Marvel have some degree of chronological storage, but I also take into account their release dates and which sub-franchise they're related to as well. In all cases media types are mixed together. Also in the living room are shelf units for any other releases that have more than one disc to a box/package, or an unusual case or cover, plus all my UHD discs; (if they didn't have any of these things they'd be in the storage cases under the sofa). These are stored alphabetically with the media types mixed together. A few large box sets get stored on top of the shelves just because they look nice and use up the 'spare' space there. All my non digital games are in the living room too (along with all my CDs, cassettes and vinyl). These are again stored alphabetically, although in the case of my cassettes, vinyl and CDs, these are also sorted by media type and size first, with any unusual sizes kept separately. In the bedroom are my audio books. These are stored together by franchise, with some attention to chronology. See, much simpler and straightforward. | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |

Even if there was, I'm not sure she'd want to live in what's basically a cross between a man cave, a home cinema in a shoe box, a Blockbusters store and a record shop, stuck between posters (nicely framed) of a Spitfire, the Enterprise (NCC1701-D), Alyson Hannigan, Sid Vicious, Ani DiFranco, and Tom & Jerry. The living room window sill is full of cacti though. | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". I see your cacti and raise you three succulents:
I probably ought to have pulled the blind down, but at least you get to see some DVDs in the reflection. I used to have a lot more cacti (and other succulents) than I have now. They once spent an entire summer in a box under a bed. The Carnegiea gigantea (second from the left) I grew from a seed in 1982. It's got a bit to go before it catches up with the giant ones you get in the wild! And for anyone who's confused, yes, the walls and ceiling are bright yellow. | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". | Posted: | | | | I keep the discs in boxes in wall unit shelves and one 5' spinner shelf. Along the wall are sorted alphabetically. The spinner shelf has 4 sides: Comic Book/Superhero, Animation, Criterion, & Graphic novels (actual books). And my 8 year old daughter has her own smaller shelf that defies sorting. |

| Posted: | | | | I have my movies in a separate room, one alphabet for blu-ray/uhd, one alphabet for dvd. On one side the two top shelves contain my cd's, music dvd's are kept separately. at the bottom and in the middle i have shelves which are wider to allow space for bigger boxes. On the floor are a number of special edition's, as wel are some big game special editions.... Click here for pics... | | | Last edited: by paulb_99 |

| Posted: | | | | When I started with DVDs (still holding about 1000 VHS cassettes then) I simply sorted them alphabetically. For my VHS Collection I never found a way to keep them sorted :-D
Step by step the collection is growing for more than 20 years now. And step by step I had to split it to keep the overview. So the first step to split was simply into "main genres". So there is one shelf for Horror, on for SciFi, one for Action/Crime/Thriller and so on. And always: First the movies, then the series. The bigger a collection gets, the more you need to have a system or you never will be able to find the movie you are just looking for...^^
Later on I did some "special splits", crossing the genres: I made one board just for movies/series basing on the works of Stephen King. He only problem there is that he also wrot for the X-Files and Outer Limits, but that is something I can't change.
And another shelf I then had to create for aaaall the movies & series basing on comics, mangas & graphic novels. Some people might think that they just exploded during the last decade, but when I started my research I had to find out that countless movies/series of the past also base on them. For comics most of the people only think about Marvel & DC and ignore all the others like even Garfield, Asterix, The Walking Dead, Lucky Luke, Turtles, The Smurfs and so on.
Anyhow the second split caused a little bit of confusion - at least in my Excel-List of the movies as "Comic Movie" is not a genre and I had the list with a very good overview sorted by genre. So the only way to keep an order was to add another column for "location". So if I don't remeber anymore where this-and-that movie should stand, I just ask Excel and it tells me: it IS a Fantasy-Movie, but it's on the BOARD for COMIC MOVIES.
If anyone wants to know more about the Comic-/Manga-Movies, PM me! I did kind of a catalogue (at least of the ones I own) but I did it in German language! |

| Posted: | | | | Alphabetical by genre. My sections are:
** Horror ** Zombies (I separate them from the main horror) ** Anime ** Tween and Hero ** Cartoons (Non-anime) ** Comedy and Drama ** Everything Else (Action, sci-fi, suspense, etc)
I do not separate DVD from BluRay from 4K as it doesn't make sense to me. I've recently run our of space in my main media shelving area and have ripped 300 DVDs to Plex (With about 50 more that I want to do). Those DVDs are stored on a separate shelf in the basement. |
