How old is your daughter now?) Jumanji (Not even as a kids movie acceptable) 27 Dresses (full of missed opportunities) Most Needed: Falling Down (checked twice: it's not there! ) Being John Malkovich Heat | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! | Posted: | | | | No offence and factoring in ppl have different tastes and yes i know my collection is not online yet i still have to iron out a couple of things.
But some ppl here just seems to me like they haven't got a good grasp of film making.
If honestly you think Australia (or Far And Away in Oz) 3:10 Yuma (good film stupid ending), or cool running's which yes is a very fun movie but hardly a cinematic master piece. Is the best in a persons collection someone needs to do more research and buy more films and the same would go for the person who's collection is being rated.
Im lucky one of my friends has seen about 20,000 odd films and i have many conversations him about movie and find my self watching things i might have never thought i would and enjoyed it. |

While I understand the point you are attempting to make I think it's a rather elitist attitude. Film is meant to be enjoyed - and because everyone's tastes are different so should film be. I personally would never want to sit through an Ingmar Bergman film (again)- despite knowing that they are classed as classic cinema. They hold no interest for me. Does this mean I have no understanding of film or no taste? Of course not - it simply means that they don't appeal to my taste. People like what they like - be it Cool Runnings, Australia, Gone With the Wind or Porky's. Nothing wrong with that! |

True there are certain things which are to do with taste but then there are things which are universiley considered classic by most ppl who take an intrest in film. Ingmar Bergman is not something that would be considered universaly appealing. The Seventh Seal is hit and miss for those outside of the whole art house scene. Personely i find it to be a great look at life, death and morality. Where as something like the Godfather which was responsible for a large part of the resurection of cinema has a wider appeal and is one of the good example of what is a consider a universal classic. My taste is not limted to those kind of films though i also like things such as timecop. While i find that to be a good movie im not about to say it's a classic. Im being praticle about film not elitist. |

Im being praticle about film not elitist. Now your initial post makes more sense. However, this thread is only the personal opinions of people here. No one is saying that Australia is a classic for example - they simply stating that, in their opinion, it was the best film in the collection of the person they were reviewing. Take my collection for example....if someone was to pick Dolls, Cyborg Cop or Mortal Kombat as my Best Three I would think they needed their head examined (then I'd check to see if it's April Fools Day). But - if they were to select Schindler's List, Finding Nemo and Ben Hur in the same catergory I wouldn't think anything of it. |

The other 2 'best' actually belong to my partner and I hate BOTH OF THEM! Worst: 27 Dresses is my partners and I'm not surprised it's in this list. The other 2 are both mine and I love them both. I have no children and still think Anne of Green Gables is a classic story. As for the Most Needed: Keep meaning to buy Falling Down but I hate the other two. I don't think goblinsdoitall has no understanding of film. I just think we have different taste, that's all. |

I don't think goblinsdoitall has no understanding of film. I just think we have different taste, that's all. 3:10 To Yuma is ok. A better example of a modern western would be Open Range. It has one of the best shootouts but of course can't hold a candle to The Wild Bunch which i say was the best ever western given just how original gritty and morally ambiguous and and yet at the same time strangely conventional. The ending is totally crazy but somehow very fitting and the icing on a very big cake of pure genius. |

Im lucky one of my friends has seen about 20,000 odd films and i have many conversations him about movie and find my self watching things i might have never thought i would and enjoyed it. You miss the point of this. The thread is a recurrence of several others, that have run for several years. It would be too easy, repetitive and predictable if we just picked out 3 'masterpieces' such as Godfather, Citizen Kane or Casablanca from each others collections. For more interest and some variety, seeing users pick out personal favourites is a pleasant change. As for Cool Runnings, you'll note I actually say it is a guilty pleasure and is fun, people aren't stupid and know it is no 'film masterpiece' And as for having 'a good grasp of film making', who gives a feck?? We all get hung up at some stage in our collecting about buying and watching what you are led to believe are must sees, but the true pleasure of movie watching is being confident enough to enjoy a film, and not worrying what pipe smoking, sandal wearing leather patched elbowed 'experts' may say about it. Plus what must always be kept in mind, a collection you view is likely to be a whole families list of dvds, and many great memories are often linked to times when some dvds are viewed, and therefore nostalgia when talking about certain films is common. {climbs down from soapbox} | | | | | | Last edited: by hayley taylor |
