- the ability to add more than one country, the way we can currently add more than one studio or genre.  This might be the most difficult to implement and might be confusing.  Using the film Paroxismus as example, we would get this:
---- Italy
---- Germany
---- United Kingdom

I'd opt for that solution. Since other fields like Genres oder Media Companies are already managed like this so it actually shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Also I don't think it would be confusing. Co-productions aren't that uncommon and they are listed in a similar manner in about every TV Guide available...

It's not hard to implement, but it sucks. We need one primary country for sorting and maybe other functionality too. Of course this could be done by just using the first listed country but then we'd absolutely need a rule to list them in the order of importance. This though means that the main problem most have with the one country only solution - having to decide which is the main one - would still be there. There is no way to solve that other to a) enter artificial CoO like UK/US or b) make the CoO a free text field. Both solutions aren't good at all, so I'm afraid you have to live with deciding upon a main country until everyone's willing to sacrifice sorting by country.... which I wouldn't be :/

A hierarchy of CoO's is often very difficult - if not impossible - to establish, let alone document. Therefore that whole idea "sucks" (to use your terminology).

I'd prefer a checkbox implementation similar to what we have in Subtitles, with Danae Cassandra's preference as second best.

@deejay

It's not that hard at all. I've been entering ~2000 CoO and haven't had many serious problems at all. The only problematic ones are equal collaborations between US and UK companies. An equal collaboration between a French and Italian company is far easier, as an example. The language gives that one away in 99% of the cases.

I agree a complete hierarchy is hard to establish though. That's why I prefer the current method. Deciding on the main country isn't that hard (see above), deciding between the 4th and 5th is. The only two options to prevent that are a) have one main country (and possibly additional ones in the system you described, that's still possible) or b) have them all with your system. The later one would destroy the functionality of filters, sorting and statistics.

All I can say is "let's agree to disagree" then.
