I know I’ve seen this thrown around before, but I just have to ask why we can’t officially add more video formats instead of having to do a custom addition that can’t be added to the database.

The VHS format is quite popular and should have its own format added to the database. To a lesser degree to me, but because I want VHS added, I feel that these should be added too - Beta, VCD and Laserdisc.

For how advanced the dvd profiler app is, and with all the options and buttons that are available, it doesn’t make much sense to not have as many format options that are available so that we may accurately catalog our collection.

Also, titles should be able to be displayed with different languages (and then if someone wants to change their sort title/original title, they have that option).

I have Japanese discs that, when I use that language, gets completely jumbled when it goes on the online list. Whatever the edition is, the title displayed should be able to be used, and then use the sort title to place it appropriately.

I don't see the advantage of having legacy formats added to the online database at this point in time. If you could upload a VHS profile, who would it benefit? Chances are slim indeed that anyone else would download it. Even more so for Beta, VCD and LaserDisc.

Also, it's pretty obvious that Ken doesn't want these formats in his online database. If he did, these formats would have been added from the beginning.

You do have a point about the character encodings. Unfortunately Ken seems to have gone awol, and most of the users here seem to think, as do I, that what we have is what we'll have to live with. In any case, a change to unicode would probable involve a major rewrite of DVD Profiler, so even if Ken would reappear, it's unlikely that he would go there.

Also, you can add your own custom Media Types locally and add any icon you like.

Who does it benefit? Anyone who owns a vhs tape? And considering that most all of the competing media organizing apps have these formats optional, it would go to show that there are people out there that would find it useful. Which is why I brought up the other formats too. Even though I have no use for them, someone else out there could and I wouldn’t want to turn away from someone else, which is kinda what I’m talking about now.

I understand, it’s a private app, so whomever can do what they want to it (like no support for mac). However, just because something does not exist, does not mean that it can’t.

Yes, you can. I did write that up there. However, you must excuse my ignorance, but I’ve gone away from this app for a bit, actually because I tried to custom add a vhs. I can’t remember what it was, either it wasn’t showing on my online collection list, or something. But whatever it was made me start to look elsewhere. I’ll try again today to see what was bugging me.

And to be clear, the adding of vhs isn’t what fully made me look at another app. I accepted not having a desktop app for mac, which was an inconvenience for me to use someone else’s computer in the house or have to run parallels. But i get that one. That’s a big switch on their end. The full support of other languages, the lack of organization or continuity between desktop and online list and the overall back and forth that would go on in trying to get profiles updated (at times it seems like a highschool when submissions are getting voted on) - where all things that made me look at alternatives. Not just having the option for vhs.

But I will look later to see what it was. Once again, I don’t know the logistics of adding these things to the app overall. Money, people, maintenance. I don’t know what all goes into making these changes. So I could live with adding a custom if it worked out overall, but something didn’t. I don’t know, I’ll figure it out.

Since this is strictly a user contributed database, it would only benefit someone if someone else had already uploaded the VHS profile in question. What are the chances of that if the format is introduced now?

Chances are the titles are already in the database. Just download a corresponding profile by title and change it locally to your custom media format. That's what I do with digital downloads.
