Are there standardized rules for cataloging DVDs here? I ask because, having a bit of a library background I'm used to using AACR2 rules when deciding how I should vote for changes to the database. AACR2, the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd edition, is used in almost all libraries in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain.
Recently I voted no to a change of cover art for The Quick and the Dead. Despite the fact that the cover work in the database currently is completely accurate to the copy of this dvd that is in my own collection, I'm told I'm voting against the rules.
If the rules are different here, then of course I'll abide by them.

Normally as far as cover etc. are concerned the covers that are for the FIRST RELEASE are the ones that must remain in the database, re-releases are generally not allowed to overwrite them.
When a DVD is released on the same day with two different covers, 'Night at the Museum' comes to mind here as a recent release where by two covers the normal cover and a outer slip cover, it's a case of first come first serve.

It's sometimes tricky with the covers because the re-release uses the same UPC than the original. There is usually a year on the back cover that helps. In this case, "The Quick And The Dead", the original is from 1998 while the re-release is from 2000 or 2001. I just bought "Gunfight At The OK Corral" and when I entered the DVD, I found out that I have a re-release and the cover art is different. In this case I scanned my own cover and added it to my local database, then I lock the cover to make sure it will not be overwritten. I will not upload my cover to the database, that would be against the rules.

My problem is I have yet to see a DVD marked that it's a re-issue. So how does one know they're about to upload an illegal cover? |

As Dark Knight says check the images/your cover as sometimes they put a packaging date on it. If not always worth asking here before contributing. | | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |
