iTunes storage of your music

Goto Edit>Preferences>Advanced>General
In the iTunes Music Folder location:-
type in where your Music files/podcasts are stored on your computer then click on the Change button.

Exit iTunes then restart...done.

What I really like about my I-Tunes is the way I can create any genre I wish. I've got some real weird ones - e.g. early punk, northern soul original, soundtracks etc etc. Anyone else played with this?

I also have front covers scanned for all of mine which show up on the ipod - god I should have been a librarian

I swear I'm one of about 4 people who bought a Zune insted of an iPod, but saw my girlfriend having problems with Itunes all the time and didn't want to deal with that.
Anyways, I can do all the same stuff with whatever the MS program for Zune is. Has come in handy for putting on rare, demo and local stuff since I can make up album names (or use what they really are) and scan in covers to display while they play. I haven't messed with the genres but could if I wished to. I can also hook it up to any computer and grab stuff from that comp. A buddy of mine says he can only hook his iPod up to his own computer, if he hooks it to a friends it resets and deletes everything. That doesn't sound right but could be true.
Oh yeah, my screen is bigger and has better resolution than yours.

Yes use it a lot. The tag's, by default only know "Electronic music", and dont feel like adding the same genre to 95% of the 8-9000 songs (record all my CD's to the computer)

Anyway, as i understood the first question. There are 2 folders in iTunes, 1. where it imports/records the music and 2. how the program finds the files in the library.

So you can add music from a lot of places. But when you record, it adds it to the folder specified in the properties. iTunes remembers the locations of the mp3's by file that is in your "My Music" directory.

When you edit the mp3 tag's (i always edit them when i record CD's) it is, as far as i know, saved to the mp3 file. So without making a back up of the mp3's that info will be lost if the mp3's are lost.

smack me if i miss understand ( i can say that cuz you can't reach me ), but are you asking which files to copy to back up your library heirarchy, or setup, within iTunes?

If so, these two files:

iTunes Music Library
iTunes Library

from the iTunes folder in your Music folder of your internal hard drive are the ones to copy to retain this information, not the files that are created on your external drive where you keep your music. I have my music running through a miniMac with an external storage drive to my receiver, which sounds kinda like your setup.

I learned the hard way the necessity of keeping these files backup.
