| Posted: | | | | I think a handy feature would be to include DVD cover spine scans.
I don't store my DVD's in the same order they're shown in DVD profiler, so would find it handy to be able to see the spine before looking, making it easier to locate the DVD, as this is the way DVDs are stored.
As they would be quite thin, I could see them fitting in well down the side of the screen. |

| Posted: | | | | I can see the anti-piracy position. If they were in lower thumbnail resolution only for a shelf-like list display, it might work. |

| Posted: | | | | Not having the spine with the scans seems to constitute "fair use". Including the spine so you can have a full cover qualifies as a copyright infringement. |

| Posted: | | | | If the spine scans were extremely low-resolution, printing wouldn't yield anything useable. It would look cool to have a mini virtual "shelf" on our computer desktops. |

| Posted: | | | | The resolution of the spine is irrelevent. It's having all 3 parts of the cover scan that is the issue. |

It WOULD mean you would have to provide all of your own Cover Scans, this is an very old and long ago settled discussion. Including spines, in some form is a violation of the Copyright and would endanger Invelos, therefore the Rule is as it is. But if you choose to provide complete cover art for your own consumption, be our guest. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | Just for the sake of argument, let's say I do want to make my own virtual shelf and I'm willing to scan my own spines to do it. Is there a method in Profiler to associate the spine scan with the profile? A virtual shelf might be fun when I get really bored. |

| Posted: | | | | If I understand you correctly, midnit, the simple answer is no. You would have to do one of three things. 1) Scan the entire cover 2) Scan Front with spine 3) Scan Back with spine

| Posted: | | | | Gotcha. I'm not sure if either of those solutions has much appeal. Ideally the spine is it's own image. I'm thinking then you can design a layout that displays those spine images consecutively. Click on a spine and the proper profile is displayed, maybe below the shelf. I don't think I'd want to lose the rear image and expanding either image to include the spine would mean some partial image displaying in order to get the proper effect. At this point, it's probably the least thing I have to worry about. I'm still finding low-res images in my database. |

| Posted: | | | | mdnitoil, the low-resolution would simply be something to discourage printing for piracy reasons. Having the front, back and spine as separate fields would force pirate-printers to piece together elements of differing qualities, which would look like junk. We could even disallow the spine image from being included as a report element.
Dr. Kill, good idea. I do not think thumbnail view of the collection list can currently support rear images. I can only get it to show front images. | | | Last edited: by Doombear |

| Posted: | | | | couldn't a place for the spine be available in the program but just not allow spines to be contributed. Kind of like how the actor headshots are done.
Also, I imagine there is some way that this can be done with an html window and local images of the spines.

| Posted: | | | | There was a request to be able to add more than just the front & rear scans for things like alternate covers from re-releases. If that comes in, you could use it for that. |

Some of the layouts support image galleries which would allow you to do that, but I don't expect to see it ever within the program itself, simply playing it very conservatively from a legal standpoint relative to Invelos. If they don't support it, they can in no way be held liable for the actions of their users and this has been an issue for other websites.

I wasn't against purposely crippling the spine images, I was merely commenting that I have plenty of current work to do on my database without taking on any new projects. I've still got front and backs that are poor images. Getting all that in order takes priority over anything new. Frankly, even if Profiler did support the addition of a third image, it would probably be a year before I was in a position to do anything with it. | | | Last edited: by mdnitoil |
