I would like to see the collection number field both allow alpha and leading zeros.

i.e. I keep all my Disney Movies in one place and would like to use DISNEY as the collection number.

i.e. I have all of the James Bond movies on a shelf rather than in one of my changers, so would like to use 007 (I do use just 7 atm).

I agree with this, at least for one leading alpha character. and possibly the choice to format numbers to X number of places ie, show all numbers to 3 places would show 7 as 007.

I do something similar, I currently have my anime numbered at 1001-1999 (at least that high is reserved for it)

I once thought it would be easier to have Anime as A1, A2, A3,...ect. Unfortunatly it didnt accept the alpha characters so i had to stick with the numbers...but until customizable tabs are added (each with their own collection numbers) this is the best way to keep my dvds sorted how i like.

This isn't what collection numbers were designed for. They were designed as an easy way to count your collection.

Use tags, and location/slot, parent profiles and sort titles for improvements to how you organize in the program.

In addition, going from a numeric to alphanumeric field creates more overhead in the database and is not a simple change in the program.

I second this. I'd like to have alpha numeric collection numbers as well for a completely different purpose.

I've got to agree with nolesrule - the slot and location fields already cover this.

I can see the reasons for not allowing it, and realize it would require a change to the program, but don't think it is really as complicated as you think (numbers, especially integers, can be cast to strings quite easily). But I think the use of grouping specific titles based on some set criteria is still a valid request.

As far as what collection numbers are designed for, where does it say they are to count my collection. and even if they are, if its supposed to be an easy way to do so, it really isn't because of the various ways that people count there collection (tv series vs movie box sets vs single movies etc, etc)

Collection numbers currently just fill next number by default (if you want something else you have to either change it or check the none box) so it gives you the same count as your owned list does (total dvds) unless you change it.

Locatation and slot do not cover this, because those cover something else...and its quite concevieable that they are used for that something else. that something else being location and slot. also location and slot are per disc, not per profile...collection number is per profile. I see i can sort by location, slot but I can't view it in the collection list. and how does that work for multi disc sets (i don't have all mine filled in, though when i do it wont be in a changer so i really only need location/slot per profile anyway) but others need it down to disc.

I'd like to see what RHo's purpose for wanting this as that could add a whole different level.

For my use, as i stated in my first post, having customizable tabs (and being able to just add a new tab) would be the ideal solution for this...but that is just what I am trying to accomplish with it.

And yes, I already have tags set up to filter out my anime from my movies, but that doesn't accomplish what I want when i display my complete collection.

As far as box sets, should I make one big 'virtual' box called Anime? because I don't want that.

Sort titles also don't work, I'm currently happy with my sort titles. They are set up to sort movies alphabetically for the most part, while keeping sequels in their proper order together. so dont want to prepend Movie to all my movies, and Anime to all my anime, and TV to all my tv.

Additionally, no one that disagreed with the idea said anything about the idea of paddng numbers out so they are all 2, 3, 4, or however many digits. I personally would do that because I think it makes the column/number listing cleaner looking

Look at tags or the boxset in boxset feature (look at this thread in particular to see a screenshot and instructions).  They may be able to solve your problem today rather than waiting for a solution that may never come.

I would find it useful to be able to use Alpha in collection numbers because of the way I label my box sets. Example:

2947 Twisted Terror Collection
  2947A The Hand
  2947B Dr. Giggles
  2947C Someone's Watching Me!
  etc

Now I have to set the same collection number for all children as for the parent box set. Not a big problem, but it would be nice if Profiler could reflect this.

I number the parent and don't number the children.  It's personal preference, but my numbers represent items purchased.  I have no need to number the children.  Of course different people use the collection number for different reasons.  But you don't have to assign a number to the child profiles.
