| Posted: | | | | According to DVDSavant, next Tuesday will see a half dozen little advertised Best Buy exclusives of old SF movies. This seems peculiar given that Best Buy doesn't seem to be getting in a whole lot of supposedly generally available 20th Century movies lately, aside from a few box sets. (Which is true of more and more DVD outlets -- 20th Century movies are making it to DVD but they aren't making it to shelves.) Anyhow, look for the following at $20 apiece:
World Without End Satellite in the Sky When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth Battle Beneath the Earth Moon Zero Two The Ultimate Warrior
When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth has been on my want list soley due to its starring Victoria Vetri, a Playmate of the Year whose centerfold was an extraordinary piece of photography. There is an interesting story about her name.
She was born Victoria Vetri. As if this weren't a great name, she decided to make one up for her career in show business. Inspired by the mysteriously abandoned ship Angela Doria, she became Angela Dorian. Under that name she appeared in Playboy and became Playmate of the Year. Playboy mansion regular Roman Polanski noticed her and hired her for a small role in Rosemary's Baby. In the novel, this character mentions that many people think she looks like Gina Lollobrigida. By the time Rosemary's Baby came out, Gina Lollobrigida was no longer quite as hot as she once was, and the studio did not want to use that comparison. They would use some made-up Italian sounding name. Dorian volunteered her real name, Victoria Vetri, and sure enough, the actress credited as Angela Dorian wound up comparing herself to Victoria Vetri in the movie. Moreover, she switched back to her real name for her subsequent movie career, so that if you see When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth first and then see Rosemary's Baby, you can see that yeah, by damn, that Angela Dorian sure does resemble Victoria Vetri.... |

There was a ship called Andrea Doria, but it wasn't mysteriously abandoned. | Posted: | | | | Well, it's not easy to keep track of all these ships. The reason I remember the Andrea Doria incident so well is because my dad worked as a purser on Stockholm the summer before the collision. But back to the original subject... First of all they're not $20 apiece since they are double bills. So they are $20 for two films. They are - World Without End / Satellite in the Sky - When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth / Moon Zero Two - Battle Beneath the Earth / The Ultimate Warrior I'd like to get them all, but darn it, BB don't ship outside the US I liked "When Dinosaurs..." because of Jim Danforth's animation. Not quite Harryhausen class, but pretty darn close, I'd say. Apart from that one, the only other one of these I've seen is Battle Beneath the Earth which has shown a number of times on TCM over here. I hope these will get a general release eventually... | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

Well, that's certainly good news. Quote: I'd like to get them all, but darn it, BB don't ship outside the US
Well, as I understand, Battle Beneath the Earth demonstrates how to foil a Chinese Communist conspiracty to literally undermine the United States! No telling what sort of sensitive information might be in the other flicks! However, I believe those two Best Buy exclusive SF/horror packs (of which The Incredible Shrinking Man was the only A-list item) are now available from Amazon as one collection, The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection (yuck, who is in charge of these moronic titles?). So there is hope for this trio of double bills. |

| Posted: | | | | I'm up for these on release day. On Best Buy's website, these titles are listed as $16.99 each. Now we're down to $8.50 per movie. I'm open to shipping a set or two out at cost for our Profiler friends who are unable to aquire them. The other option is the mark up on eBay. | | | Last edited: by mdnitoil |

| Posted: | | | | FYI on When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I'm sure most folks who frequent other boards are already aware, but for those who don't, this movie is billed on the packaging as the 96 minute censored G cut. Turns out, the disk actually contains the 100 minute uncensored cut. The last time this happened was with a Swamp Thing release. Some irrate mother complained about the nudity in her G movie and Warners quickly had the stock pulled and eventually reissued the cut version of the disk. No idea what will happen here but do with the information what you will. |

| Posted: | | | | Hm. So what are the hot four minutes to which we should be fast-forwarding? Has anyone figured out where the first tribe gets its big stock of 20-year-old blond girls for sacrifice? One wonders how often they do this sacrifice thing and whether the depletion of the stock might force them to invent hair coloring.... I never could figure out the rating system. The Outlaw Josey Wales is rated PG with a scene of Sondra Locke getting all her clothes torn off as her outlaw kidnappers discuss the pros and cons of gang rape. Swamp Thing gets the same rating, but apparently two brief scenes of bare breasts, both in a peaceful and consensual context, had to be cut to get it. | Posted: | | | | Well, the star of this flick, Victoria Vetri, was just coming off of her stint as playmate of the year. Presumably in an effort to showcase all of her talents, the director made sure there were a couple of booby shots in the film. Don't ask me for time stamps because I didn't pay attention. I think the Dr. Skin website should have that covered. |

For the record, I was going to wait on picking this up until I read this thread. Just cuz it took 6 years or so for Swamp Thing to get noticed and recalled, this could happen quicker. Those Classic Sfi-Fi Ultimate Collections were from Universal, these are Warner Bros. I think Universal is a bit more in tune with demand and will get discs to those who want them. WB has seemed retarded at best to me recently, although they have tended to re-issue everything in the past (now if they'd just release everything in the first place ). Someone else probably holds the U.K. rights to these flicks anyway. |

| Posted: | | | | Crazy. There's already a report on another board of a store not shelving this title. When the customer asked about availability, he was told that the disk was listed as "defective". That seems like an awfully quick corporate response to me, but at the very least the purchasing run is on. | | | Last edited: by mdnitoil |

| Posted: | | | | There weren't any on the shelves of the local BB in the horror or sci-fi sections so I thought they must have already been recalled, but there they were on the New Releases rack. So I got mine. I've been waiting for a proper DVD of WHEN DINOS.... for a long time, so I'm quite glad to get it. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

| Posted: | | | | Those dinosaurs still seem to be ruling the Earth. I haven't actually been to Best Buy since picking up the disc, but their website still offers it. The online service shows it backordered, but if you want to pick it up it will show stores near any zipcode you input where it should be available. That's not an absolute promise, but a lot of stores came up when I put in a couple zips experimentally.
Note that you need to search (online) not for Moon Zero Two or When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, but for
Sci-Fi 70's #1 (Dbfe) |

| Posted: | | | | There were still 2 copies at my local, and much smaller compared to neighboring cities, store. They were in teh Sfi-Fi section under Moon, last week they were only on the new release rack. I'd say instant recall rumors are false, now we just need someone to call. A bud of mine does a great old lady impression... Just kidding, I take pride in not being a jerk. | | | Last edited: by bigdaddyhorse |

| Posted: | | | | All were gone at local BB; they were in new releases last week and now nothing there or in Sci-fi. I assume the employees bought them all up to sell on eBay as usual. Glad I got my set last week. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |
