Hello!  New to DVD Profiler and just getting my feet wet (installed, bought, and registered today) and am having trouble figuring out how to add (easily) an exact dupicate DVD.

I did some searching and it *looked* like in the newest version this should be possible.  Some of the older posts I found talked about selecting a different local or adding a tag like "duplicate".  However, I can't even get to that point... I use a barcode scanner and as soon as I scan the barcode I get an error indicating that I already have that DVD.  Well, yes, I know that but I have two of them and I'd like to add both to my database so I know what I have duplicates of and what I can get rid of

I did not find anything in the "Options" that allowed me the ability to "accept" duplicates.

Hopefully I'm just missing something easy because I'd think being able to add a duplicate is most definitely something that should be allowed (after maybe a pop indicating that one already has this DVD and are you sure you want to continue?).

Thanks and sorry if this has already been discussed but I didn't see it.

Hi... Welcome to the forum.

There is no option for adding duplicates. There is a few ways to work around it though. As you mentioned Tags is one way. You would put the first one into the system only (all it will let you do) and when you are done adding it. just go to the Set Tags tab and create a tag that says Duplicate or something like that. Then you can check it off. This way you will only ever see one listing for it in your list. But it will let you know what you have more copies of.

Another way to do this is after you add all the copies (excluding duplicates) go to add disc by title and uncheck the Download from Invelos box at the bottom of the screen. This will create a manual profile. and then just go to the one you have a second copy of... click DVD-->Copy then go to the manual profile you created and click DVD --> Paste. This will give you an exact copy of another DVD so both is listed in your collection. The only downside to this is only the original listing will get updates. So you would have to get the updates on the original and then copy and paste it to the duplicate one each time there is an update for it.

Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing for you.

I use the Tag method to identify those titles I have duplicates of.  I add to my notes field (1) the date I bought/received the duplicate, the vendor, and how much I paid for it.  That's the only thing I need to know.  Then, since I have only one PROFILE in my collection I get all the updates for it.  When or if I dispose of the duplicate, all I have to do is untag it and delete the section of my notes dealing with the extra copy(copies).  While it's true that this will skew my collection count, I'm not really worried about that count.

Thanks very much for the info and suggestions, guys!

I bought this for 2 reasons... integrates with SageTV and it was ranked #1 on the Top10 list (11 different DVD cataloging programs reviewed).

So far all I've been doing is inputting and I've put in about 400 in just a couple hours.  Not too bad and am very happy so far but am a bit disappointed that it can't handle this, what I view as, a very simple "thing" for a database program.

I would say that I'd hope to see the capability to add duplicates in a future release but just noted that no betas have even been put out in about a year.  While $30 isn't a ton of money, I hope to see continued development of this program because it seems to work pretty good thus far!

Keep in mind that this is a personal Collection management program, not a retail store program. While I thin everyone of us sometimes , accidentally, purchases a duplicate of what we already might own. And i don't refer to double-dipping. From my own personal POV, when This happens I don't care about entering the duplicate copy into my database at all, I simply set aside for somebody's Christmas. Entering duplicates would take this program into a new level and in all likelihood a totally different cost structure.

I understand that and I'm not a retail store... I just ended up buying a few large collections so have some duplicates.  It is so easy to input the DVDs into the program I was thinking/hoping that I could just input ALL my DVDs then use the program to more or less "tell me" what I have duplicates of and then I could easily print a list of the duplicates.

As of now, I'm figuring out my duplicates by method of the program giving me an error. LOL!  I'm just putting those in a different stack for now and probably won't input them at all.  Like was mentioned before, it is not all that valuable to have listed your duplicates... unless trying to do something like I am trying to do and since I can't do that, I'll just stick my dupes to the side for now.  Thanks, guys!

another easier way to add a duplicated dvd is to take the one you have already in local data base and change the locality of the dvd, (across the top task bar- file /collection/dvd/view / etc., ) and pick locality under dvd ., change the locality from , say, USA to Canada, then go back to the data base and find the same dvd under the old locality ( usa), and then downthat one.
You'll now have two exact same duplicates under the same UPC/ean (use European for Ean), NOW  do not contribute the locality duplicate, make all your changes to the first DVD ( USA) and use that only for contribution., Do not contribute Canada or other such locality you manually made up .
Of course if there is already the said locality in the database, you may and will find that 9 times out of ten they don't match 100%., ( i.e.) different scans , cast members not in order etc etc..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Thanks, Terry!  I'm no expert with DVD Profiler but from what I have learned so far, I think this is probably the best option.  I ended up deciding to not input my duplicates.  I put them to the side and if I want to create a list of duplicates for sale or something like that then I'll likely just create another file and input them into that (much easier to scan the barcode than manually type a list! ).  Thanks!

As an anal retentive to whom the disk count matters this was the best solution add a manual entry with the same name then copy and paste the original into it.

I recently bought a boxed set that included the same edition as I already owned but didn't want to get rid of the original disk. This allowed me to add the extra disk without loosing the original.

Thank you.
