Last night I wanted to help build the new database so I contributed a batch of DVD's that were all new contributions.  I never got the contribution screen, just a message at the bottom right corner of my screen confirming the contribution.

Now I look at them and a few have "No" votes with comments that they are the same or that I'm changing things.  How can a new contribution but the same as an existing profile ?  What am I not understanding here ?

Someone contributed it before you... it was still pending when you contributed and then the person's contribution before you was released and so yours would show up for voting.

At the time you contributed, there was nothing approved in the database. As soon as the first contribution was approved, the rest of the contributions (contributions for title that weren't in the DB at the time it was made) for that title went up for voting

I see,  I don't know where I got that but I was under the impression that something would tell me there's a pending contribution.  I must have misread something because it wasn't doing it either in the "old" version.

The only way to check if there is a new contribution, at least that I have found, is to first contribute the profile, then check the contribution notes on your contribution list

Yes it did, actually - it was just a lot less likely that two people would submit a profile at the same time (ie. a second before the first one was approved) ... it did happen on big titles about release date though, quite a few times.

FWIW one other contributor and I always PMd each other before a pre-release contribution so we wouldn't duplicate each other, because we used to send them in at the same time so often (just after the EAN became available and we have the same tastes)
