Looking for some opinions as to my priorities for work on plugins to take advantage of the new capabilities and fields in Profiler 3.6.

Any ideas for improvements can also be consolidated here. I am also curious as to whether the community would support a one-time small fee for the upgrades, perhaps even a blanket "one fee for all" type of thing? I took a stab at LoadDVD Pro, which has an amazing capability on top of LoadDVD, but there is not much interest. I have considered splitting out the Playlist Manager / Viewer into a separate plugin, "MediaViewer": any thoughts on that? Would that be worth a small fee?

Most of the functionality of MyTabs and MyTools have been incorporated into the new Profiler 3.6. But I have some ideas for a bit of value added capability having to to with filters and command files. As I understand better what is available, I might rework them; otherwise, I will just withdraw them.

(If any of the moderators can correct my spelling error for DVDProfileLoop - thanks)

Also, by the way, if any other member would like to take a stab at an alternative approach to any of my plugins, let me know. I have plenty of ideas for new plugins in my backlog.  I wouldn't mind stepping aside if somebody wants to make a (hopefully) better version of one of my existing tools. No competition - no hard feelings. Just let me know, so I can avoid future duplicate efforts.
Thanks for your support.

    I voted for BulkEdit.

I have categorized my DVDs, BDs, HD DVDs, D-Theater tapes and Laserdiscs using workaround methods, and will now use the custom media types.

Bulkedit would come in handy if it supported these new custom-created media types.

Changing 1400+ discs manually is not really something I'd be looking forward to

BulkEdit is the one I use most as well, so that has my vote. And I wouldn't mind paying a fee for all your work and your constant updates.

Since you asked . I hate the idea and in my opinion it should be mentioned somewhere in the DVDP rules that the plugins should be free of charge for every user.

Why is that? I see this db as community effort and people can participate (if they like) in many different ways to make it better. You cannot charge for your contributions, scans, layouts, time spend beta testing, helping other users on forums, sharing screenshots, links etc. etc. I just can't see the reason why time spend for writing plugins should be threated any other way. Donation for plugins would be OK, but mandatory fee for using one just fights against my idea how this software, including db, could be made better for all users. I just think that this should be pure hobby for all others excluding Ken and Gerri. My two cents....

I hear you, and feel the same way for the most part. This is exactly why I struggle with the idea ...

But what happens when you make a plugin that people start to use or possibly even "depend on," is that it becomes more than just a hobby. You set an expectation to be responsive: to fix bugs, to support new fields, etc. It is more like a responsibility. And sometimes people get a bit annoyed if I am late, or my program has bugs or if I decide not to do something the way they want it. I feel less put upon if I'm getting compensated - even if only by a token amount.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, I did obtain permission from Ken not only to experiment with fees, but to announce and support such plugins on this site, within reason.

Thanks for taking the time to share your honest opinion.

But they shouldn't and that's the point. They should understand that this is a hobby for you too and you're working to help 'em without any compensation, besides a good feeling you get when you can help people. This goes for all "community work."

Other thing that I'm in fear is that what happens that one day if you get bored and don't want to play any more? This just happened with Goodguy. First he charged for he's plugin and next day he's pissed for Skip and Invelos and leaves. Someone said that he will release a 3.6 support for his plugin, but I wouldn't know about it. I havent heard him since. He sure took my money...

I just think that it isn't "in a spirit" of DVDP or any community based work that some people get payed for their time and some don't. I've used countless hours to support this software and for now have a plan to continue to do so. I don't expect or even want to get payed for it.

At the end I must say that I give all my respects to pluging developers who continue their great work to make this HOBBY more enjoyable for the all of us.

You have no guarantee that GM or Invelos or Microsoft or any other company will be in business forever. It boils down to value. If I charge $5.95 for lifetime use of a plugin, my assumption is that the person will get reasonable value by the time that "life" is over - the person, the program, the technology, the person's need for it, or whatever.

It is clear that in general, people don't value plugins enough to pay for them, yet they expect professional commitments from the authors, such as your views on Goodguy. You are feeling ripped off, even though I would suspect you got great use from his plugin for some period of time - and maybe it even still works.

And just because something is a hobby, doesn't mean that it cannot provide revenue (according to US tax laws). My endeavors absolutely do not provide a profit, although it is my dream that people would value my efforts enough to make it so (even if only $1). I spend quite a bit of money to do it, yes because I want to, and also bypass the opportunity to take a small job that actually pays quite well - again, my choice.

But, I have gotten both more donations and "purchases" since I launched LoadDVD Pro. People pay mostly only when they have to. On the other hand, I have gotten a handful of donations that left me in disbelief and tears - they were so generous.

Anyways, I totally appreciate your willingness to share your views and listen to mine as well.

Coz' I really like the ability to switch layouts with a single click, or filter unseen titles.
Although it's always a drag to build the suitable icons

Thank you. I should be able to make it more cool with the new toolkit. Ken gave us a lot of additional goodies. Have you tried using the 3.6 icon library? He has some nice ones in there. Actually, that reminds me - MyTools is one of the two of my plugins that are actually broken on 3.6. Since it is such a small and simple plugin, maybe I'll take a shot at it soon, to get some experience with the new toolkit.

Mithi, quick fix for RunCommand.exe. Put an extra "Up" command into RunCommand.au3 and recompile, that is, if you know how to use AutoIt. Meanwhile, I am looking to see if there is a better way to do this with the new toolkit.
