For the past month or more, my family's life has been in upheaval. My oldest (son) fared unwell not being the center of attention and decided to go medieval on everyone in the family on twitter and facebook. My middle kid (married daughter with three daughters of her own) has had a rough nine months... they moved to southern California on a promised job for my son-in-law which never materialized. So until a week or so ago, they were homeless, living in their van and various motels. They now have a two-bedroom apartment in Garden Grove and he works for Disney Travel. My youngest daughter only had one problem, which precipitated the outburst by her brother. Her problem was jury duty. She was called to serve last year, but was scheduled for the week before fall finals week at UCLA (6 hours south of here). She got a postponement until this summer. Unfortunately, being scheduled for last week was no problem until my wife's moyamoya needed to be addressed by EDAS (encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis) to be performed this past Wednesday. When we called about the jury duty Friday, she was put off until Wednesday or later. She called Monday and the clerk said she had to report Wednesday morning, and was not receptive to any more postponements... even for her mother having brain surgery. Finally, she served on Thursday while Mom was in the hospital. The first judge was sympathetic, but put her back in the jury pool. The second judge was not sympathetic at all... the defense lawyer dismissed her because she attended many classes in high school with the rape/murder defendant. The judge did not want her challenged!

So my son writes that she needed to be put in jail, while he offers no sympathy for his stepmom's brain surgery.

Ann's home now, and life with her is good. She'll be off work for four weeks or more, but other than being tired, she seems to be recovering well. For a photo of her scar, go to here.

If you go to me (Cliff Adams -- use Sacramento as a location) on facebook for my moment to moment updatings for family.

If you check here, you will find a livejournal my wife started with her thoughts before and after surgery.... I imagine she will add to it over the next few weeks.

I don't know if I'll return to this forum often, but the support we've received from at least one fine UK profiler (Hi, Graham!) has been delightful. Others have left kind thoughts on my facebook wall.

I share the exact same sentiments as the good doctor.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

Wow. That has been a rough time, Cliff. You'll get out of it or it will pass after a while, though! Stay from for yourself and for your family.

I wish your wife a speedy recovery and the strength to continue "pushing" now that the worst part of that experience is over.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and words. A few of you have become facebbook friends with me; a few have chatted with me. I bask in the warmth of your kindness.

My youngest has tried to extend a welcome back to her older brother and he has sort of accepted it (while still bashing my older daughter and me). He has come to fabricating stories about his childhood to justify his anger at me. Oh, well. Either he understands he's making this stuff up and the guilt will eventually bother him, or he'll live a life of perpetual denial. It's his life to live as he chooses. I'll always be here for him.

Again, thank you.
