25/01 - Django Unchained - I liked this one much better than his previous one (Inglorious Bastards. It was still too long, and if he made it 30-40 minutes shorter, it would great. Some greatly shot action sequences. I wasn't a big fan of the music. While there is great music and good songs in it, there is no continuity as it all too different. I would have liked it better if it had a classic western score combined with a few orginal songs. 26/01 - The Last Stand - Arnold makes a nice comeback. Fast paced action movie. 01/02 - Zero Dark Thirty - The story about the capture of OBL, kept me interested all the way through. While there was very little action, it had a nice build-up, and never got boring. 16/02 - A Good Day to Die Hard - It was quite OK, but it seems like the John McClane character lost some of his wittiness. 09/03 - Frits & Franky - Sequel to Belgian comedy Frits & Freddy. One of the lead characters of the first movie was unavailable, and a new character was added. Sadly, it wasn't all that funny. 15/03 - Oz the Great and Powerful - I expected a little more of this one. It started out ok, but in the middle it lost momentum. It did get better towards the end. As I watched the 2D version, I'll probably get the 3D Blu-Ray to see if it adds to the experience. 30/03 - Spring Breakers - Bunch of gals missing the necessary funding to go on spring break, decide to do a hold up. Filmed in a very annoying way, and very boring.
XXXIth Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival 07/04 - The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia - A young family moves to an old house in Georgia with a history. Not too bad 10/04 - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D - 3D sequel which takes place many years after the original story. It was ok and the 3D added to the fun.
26/04 - Oblivion - After a battle with aliens, the earth is left devastated. One of the last remaining repairmen has memories he can't place, until a spaceship crashes. 17/05 - Parker - A thief gets double-crossed and left for dead. With the aid of a real-estate agent, he seeks revenge. I read it was rather bad, but I enjoyed it. After the opening setup, there is a small dip, but the movie recovers well. 24/05 - Furious 6 - Still entertaining, and the prologue sets up part VII. Keep 'em coming. 31/05 - Star Trek Into Darkness (3D) - Not as powerful as the previous one, but still a good follow up, and some nice links to the old movies. 21/06 - Man of Steel (3D) - Not a bad reboot of the franchise, but the movie was much darker as I expected 12/07 - The Heat - An uptight FBI agent reluctanly hooks up with a foul mouthed cop to bring down a drug lord. It had it's moments but overall it ended up as mediocre. 24/07 - World War Z - Very suspensful movie about a zombie virus outbreak. Could have been even better if they didn't stick to the PG-13 rating 27/07 - Now You See Me - A group of magicians is brought together to pull of a few crimes. Very entertaining. 08/09 - We're the Millers - A drug dealer gets robbed. To pay of his debt he needs to make a drug run to Mexico. In order to pull it of he assembles a fake family. Fun no-brainer. 13/09 - The Conjuring - A family moves to a new house that seems to be haunted. The first half was too boring. With a cut 15 to 20 minutes shorter, this could have been a good movie. 29/09 - Rush - Story about Formula One and the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. I expect a little more race footage, but the lead characters were perfectly cast, and the fact that the dialogue was their native languages added to the authenticity. 11/10 - Het Vonnis - When a burglar uses excessive force, a man loses his wife and child. Due to a technicality, the perpetrator is set free. The man decides to take matters in his own hand. A good thriller about the failings in our judicial system. Too bad the ending kind of ruins the movie. 29/11 - Marina - True story based on the life of Rocco Granata, who emigrates to Belgium when his father comes to work in the mines. The story depicts his youth up until his breaktrough as a singer. A very well made movie, a warm story, aided by the splendid production design and realistic sets. 28/12 - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Film of the second book in the series. It is good, but with a runtime of nearly 2 and a half hours, the pace of the first half is a little slow. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

| Posted: | | | | My spot... many more visits last year then previously but not that many compared to some of you! Total Visits: 1513/1 Les Miserables Excellent adaptation from the musical which loses only a little in translation to the cinema... I was hard as nails so only cried twice... ****1/2 3/2 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey My second viewing and I enjoyed it again **** 16/2 A Good Day to Die Hard High octane action and great set pieces but the logic (or lack thereof) of the plot meant the action didn't hang off the story very well... and whilst action heroes are supposed to be super-tough some of the damage and falls being survived here, with barely a bruise, pushed my suspense of disbelief to the limit and beyond **1/2 31/3 Jack the Giant Slayer Enjoyable fairytale re-telling with touches of Princess Bride in places... obviously a bit CGI heavy but I didn't check my watch for the whole 2 hour running length which is an excellent sign, and a fun little twist at the end ***1/2 28/4 Iron Man 3 (in 3D) Very good continuation of the saga, top notch action, RDJ great as always (as was Ben Kingsley), decent plot and all in all a fun way to spend an afternoon. Not so keen on the way they decided to end the film tough... and BTW, there is a short after credits sequence but, really, it's not worth the time to sit through the credits to get to **** 5/5 Olympus Has Fallen Great action thriller in the style of Die Hard and Under Siege. Clever enough to avoid a lot of the usual clichés and often putting a little twist on them, but straightforward enough to get on with the often bloody and exciting action. Thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours **** 18/5 Star Trek: Into Darkness Stunning sequel to JJ Abrams reboot of the series. Cumberbatch was excellent as the 'villain of the piece', the effects were brilliant (though heavily trailered!), the action was full on but was hung onto a solid plot with some nice twists plus there were some nice clever touches for the fans - could easily turn out to be my 'Best film of 2013' when I look back. ****1/2 29/6 World War Z Not really a big horror fan and neither is my wife but we both enjoyed this so it must have something pretty good going for it! A few too many coincidences and unbelievable accomplishments by the hero but well crafted, good action and genuinely tense at times ***1/2 27/7 Wolverine Somewhere in there there's a decent film struggling to get past the confusing, hard to follow plotlines. Good effects though and some nice set pieces. ***1/2 4/8 RED 2 If you've seen the first one and know what to expect (over the top, fun-filled action) then this is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Good humour, great set pieces, actually a pretty decent plotline and overall a thoroughly enjoyable romp **** 7/9 Riddick A good summary for this would be a cross between Pitch Black and Aliens; starting slowly (maybe too slowly for some) but with a steady build up and occasional 'rushes' throughout - the plot was basic but worked well and enough of the characters were properly defined to support it (Katee Sackhoff in particular was excellent IMO). There was nice creature design and realisation (esp for the IIRC relatively low budget), the tech was cool and (mostly) logical and there were a few ultraviolent touches just at the right times... It's already on my Blu-ray "To buy" list **** 13/9 Rush Superb biopic which gets the characters just perfectly and judges the pace between personal lives and racing extremely well. An interesting story of two polar opposite drivers building in admiration for each other, though never liking each other, told in a great film ****1/2 17/9 White House Down I don't care what the critics say, I loved it... maybe a bit silly - the plot does seem to have a few gaping holes - but certainly action packed (after a rather slow start) and fun to watch. If the plot was more logical this really might have been up there with the better Die Hard sequels but even as it is it still great viewing entertainment **** 30/10 Thor: The Dark World The best post Avengers superhero movie so far, for me... a great mix of action, characters and effects with a good plot, some nice twists and well judged humour that really worked (especially in the latter part of the film). I was also surprised and pleased that the vast majority of the 'on Earth' action was set in London rather than a US city, for once, and it gave it a nicely different 'feel' than a lot of the other superhero films - great entertainment ****1/2 15/12 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug All action part 2 of the saga improves on the first part with a faster moving plot (significant amounts of which aren't from the book, be warned!), great new characters, scary spiders, even more Orcs and, of course, a fantastic dragon; shame about the sudden ending but they have to leave some of the book for Part 3 of the film I suppose ****1/2 | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong | | | Last edited: by Voltaire53 |

| Posted: | | | | 01/17 - Silver Linings Playbook. Nice chick flick. Stellar acting from both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper whose careers will undoubtedly soar after this. Jennifer and Bradley are both hot. 01/24 - The Hobbit 3D. Way too long But after a slow start, good entertainment I would have preferred an extended ending in lieu of the slow build-up. 01/30 - Zero Dark Thirty. Powerful and riveting. Brought some tears, as I was in NYC that unforgettable day 9/11/2001. 02/?? - Lincoln. Probably most impactful if you are a student of US history. 02/?? - ARGO. Good, but IMHO not better than others that didn't win OSCAR Best Picture. 03/13 - Life of Pi. One of the best movies I have ever seen, period. Acting, special effects, direction, cinematography, the whole 9 yards. (8/15 - Just watched again at home with friends. Still so awesome.) 05/04 - Oblivion. Much more satisfying, and had much more depth than I had expected. I think Tom Cruise has done some of his best acting here. 05/05 - Iron Man 3 (3D) - Good stuff for fans of Marvel super-heros, as am I, especially if you have seen Iron Man 2 and the Avengers, as have I. Not much in it for others. They'll miss the inside jokes. 05/12 - Gatsby 3D. Surreal. Luscious eye and ear candy. Cool soundtrack. I bought the mp3 version off Amazon. Can't wait to watch again when I own the BD. 06/15 - Star Trek Into Darkness A must see for all Trekkies. Lots of places where prior knowledge enhances the enjoyment, but not required to still be a pretty decent sci-fi thriller. 06/23 - Man Of Steel. I liked the new approach to a well covered subject. Awesome amounts of action, hence my wife hated it. 07/12 - Pacific Rim 3D. Not much to it in terms of substance, but I loved it. A couple of my favorite people in there, lots of action and big noise. Anime and Godzilla movie fans will have fun. 07/18 - White House Down. Entirely predictable outcome, but like a roller coaster, the fun is in how you get there. And there were unexpected gags in the middle of mayhem that actually worked for me. Maybe I was just in the mood for nonsense. 08/01 - Wolverine 3D. If you are an X-Men fan, you will love this. Spoiler: (Select to view)If you like Japanese culture and know some of the language, you will enjoy. Also, be sure to stay past the credits. 08/05 - The Heat. Mindless predictable silly rude vulgar fun. I love Sandra Bullock. That's it. 08/14 - Elysium. Did not live up to the hype for me. What a waste of Ms. Foster, arguably one of the most brilliant actresses alive (and still so sexy - yes, I know, but still ...) 08/16 - The Butler. Good movie with the expected impact from reliving history. So, the personal story was a good counterbalance. If you didn't live through those times, this movie can help shed some insight into what it was like, regardless of your background. ??-?? - Captain Phillips. Another marvelous performance by Tom Hanks. Even though based on true events, still riveting. Minor actors were brilliantly cast. 10/19 - Gravity 3D. If you love Sandra Bullock and the exploration of science questions we all have, you will like this movie. The physics seemed mostly accurate, with some expected and interesting results, and a couple of glaring exceptions. Sandra still sports a stunning body. Only downside is that since we know the outcome, what could have been gripping events were not quite as compelling. I could watch it again. 11/08 - Enders Game. Sesame Street SciFi. Nice CGI. Story has a couple of sweet 'n sour twists, but we could have all written the screenplay. A good vehicle to showcase a crop of budding new actors. Little Miss Sunshine (Abigail) is quite pretty now. Will definitely get the Blu-Ray. 11/10 - Thor: The Dark World 3D. Not the same impact as the first. Story was not really compelling for me, but lots of the usual noise, monsters, etc. As somebody else mentioned, you will enjoy a couple of gags near the end. And be sure to stay past the rather cool credits for another surprise. On my BD purchase list of course. 11/24 - The Hunger Games. One of the few movies that ended too soon for me - where did the time go? Love Jennifer Lawrence. I felt more engaged with the emotions and relationships portrayed than with the action details. Quite a feat, given the obnoxious (albeit fictitious) nature of their actions. Side note: they were running multiple theaters at 30 min intervals. Mall was packed and traffic was heavy, I'm sure in part due to this specific movie. Good business all around! 12/20 - American Hustle Enjoyable and funny. Clever plot twists and character development. Great performances by all the actors - (Jennifer Lawrance ) | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here.
