@TV Show collectors: What does constitute a completed series? |

| | Posted: | | | | Due to Addicted2DVD's un-buried thread I was looking over my own collection. I have a flag that tells me if I've completed a series. But it also gave me pause because there's a new thing happening in the past decades: revivals. So what does constitute a completed set for you? Let me give an example. Gilmore Girls & Veronica MarsGilmore Girls completed it's original run after seven seasons, Veronica Mars after three. Does that mean when I have that I have a complete series? But then last year there was an additional season for Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars respectively. Does it make my collection incomplete? Do you consider this to be a new series? Basically like The Connors are to Roseanne? What about that new season of 24 with the new character replacing Jack Bauer? That new season of Prison Break? Let me guess: You don't think about this at all like I just did  | | | Karsten

For example, Battlestar Galactica. The 70's one is on it's own from it's remake/revival.
Same thing with Will & Grace.
Doesn't matter if it's been decades or just a few years between them or if it's the same cast or not. |

The new Dynasty is clearly not a continuation of the original, so it's not the same series, whereas Dallas clearly IS the same series.
The 2017 Twin Peaks wasn't a separate series - it was a direct follow-on, so it counts as the same series. Same for The X-Files. Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone is a new series, not a follow-on from the Serling original (or the '80s version, or the '90s, all of which are separate series).
The V remake is a different series to the original, so counts as separate, as does the most recent Battlestar Galactica.
I'd take it on a case-by-case basis. |

IMo altough Dallas old & new are part of the same storie, for me the new one is kind of "Dallas: The Next Generation" and this way a new series. But especially Dallas has this one season (I think it was 4?) which anyhow is not part of the story as Bobby Ewing dies and the next season starts with his wife, awakening of her dream (of the whole last season!) while Bobby was taking a shower!
Some are even listed everywhere as new series altough they are the finish of the old one: Heroes & Heroes Reloaded. Heroes was cancelled after the 4th season but the story was not told till the end. They tried to continue with comic books and finally got the chance to finish their story with the Reloaded-Season. One series or two?
And the coming up "Dexter" my be in question as well! Is it just a new season altough the series has a different title? Same actors, new story to create a finish better than they did in the original season 8.
For several series - especially animated ones - we have countless remakes (Turtles, Batman, Garfield) with a lot of time between the series. Some later seasons officially continue old series (ilke X-Files), but like mentioned before: For series like Gilmore Girls, Dallas, Heroes or Twin Peaks it is always an individual decision to see old & new as 1 or 2 series. And if you cross forums of such "controversial" series, they also never find a solution everybody agrees with. The opinion might depend how much (or less) you are fan of the series... |
