| | Posted: | | | | My buying habits have reduced quite a bit. But this is not due to streaming. I still like to own my stuff. When I buy a eBook off of Amazon or an audio book from Audible, I still convert them to epub / mp3 respectively because I want to make sure "it's mine" and no death of an streaming hoster will rob me of my purchases.
But I've sort of lost interest and not all of my favourite shows are available on DVD at all. So I'm not buying what they're not selling. | | | Karsten

This contrasts to 132 Blu-rays purchased in the same time period, 11 of which are boxed sets.
So since January 2019, about 14% of my disc purchases are DVDs, and about 86% are Blu-rays.

| | Posted: | | | | Not that often anymore. I mostly only buy DVD for older TV shows and animation that I don't think will get a BD release. Like the Hanna-Barbera releases from Warner Archives. For theatrical movies, it's now BD/4K or I'll wait. I'm surprised so many people still do buy DVDs and that they are still common in stores. That format should be dead by now. BD is so much better. |

This means:
It isn't available on Blu-ray.
It isn't available digitally in HD.
The Blu-ray (or digital HD version) is 'stupidly expensive' in relation to how much I want the feature in HD.
It's very cheap and I'm not sure I'll like it much; so it's a sort of test viewing.
The Blu-ray has region compatibility issues; (this is less of an issue now as I have a multi-region BD player).
I don't see it being released in HD any time soon.
I'm desperate to own it now and will upgrade it in the future if an HD version becomes available.
The DVD has a special feature that I want that isn't on the Blu-ray release; (okay, I can't think of an example right now, but it's possible).
It's something in a series/franchise I've been buying/collecting and I want to complete the set as a 'set' and I don't think I'm likely to upgrade it in future to HD in some way.
In practice the main reasons are lack of availability in HD (typically older stuff), or the HD versions are far more expensive and I don't feel they'll come down in price anytime soon, (which is mainly for non-UK discs where there's no UK Blu-ray or HD digital release).
It is noticeable how many things aren't released in the UK anymore on Blu-ray but still get a DVD release. This is very annoying! Also (even more annoyingly) are things that are only released via streaming and can't even be purchased digitally; (e.g. Netflix.) | | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |

| | Posted: | | | | I still buy them occasionally. A lot of films and TV shows are only released once on DVD. I do prefer buying combo packs with both in, that way it's the best of both worlds. I can lend out the DVD and still have the better copy. Or sometimes all we have to use is a DVD player, like on a car trip.
Or, it's a film I haven't seen before and it's super cheap. Figure it's like renting, except I get to keep the disc. Plus, if I hate it, I don't feel bad about donating it. | | | | Lori |

However much I agree it's often just not worth the company producing the Blu-ray knowing it won't sell enough to be worth it. You only have to stand in a supermarket at the physical media section to hear "That's the Blu-ray, where are the DVDs... they'll be cheaper and I can't see the difference anyway" regularly (possibly due to poor eyesight, or often (I suspect) don to a poor TV set up... or just people being ight with money). Interestingly when they did a survey of Amazon Wish Lists, significantly more people had Blu-rays of movies listed than DVDs... but when they analysed what they bought themselves it was usually the DVD. | | Posted: | | | | This recent purchase list soplit into movies above and TV shows below is a pretty representative display of my buying habits regarding DVDs:  Almost all movies are Blu-ray except for old movies that don't rely on special effects and which I've never seen so don't even know if I like them. With TV shows most of them are not released on Blu-ray at all and even if I only insist for those shows that are action-based and have some picture value. | | | Karsten
